Oh! Bacteria Oh !: FERMENTATIONS AS A RADICAL APPROACH TO HUMAN AND NON-HUMAN ECOLOGY, HYDROBODIES

MICROBIAL FIBERS – SYMBIOSIS AND PROPERTIES OF MATTER

In Spring 2015, Joana Moher (AOUCH.Lab) began to intuitively explore fermentations, as an experimental didactic attempt to intersect science and alchemy, botany and food sovereignty. Engaged in a search for biodegradable and biomimetic materials, perhaps kinesthetic, towards a new textile incision.
What at the beginning was only to generate a raw material, with the passing of time, it became a pulse of preserving a garden, full of symbiotic interspecies relationships between humans and non-human creatures that co-evolved towards a multidisciplinary workshop – where and with fermentations, particularly through Kombucha, complex metabolic, ecological and biomateric processes and practices of small forms of life can be observed, where humans are ultimately simple collaborators.
The aim of this domestic experiment, of this workshop is to reciprocally share these tools and to explore the living-biomaterial, its properties and intersections as prima-matter towards an artistic, textile or performative or free transdisciplinary creation.

PROPERTIES OF MATTER
EQUATION through LOOPS OF TIME

[Kombucha Tea + Sugar + FERMENTATION] = Scoby Fungi- Manchurian Mushroom or Medysomyces Gisevil

[Scoby + Grow / Preserve / Dye + Dry] = MICROBIAL Cellulosis / Leather – Paper / Vegetable Body

Transdisciplinary Incision = X

Fermentation MENU
Because is an integral experimental workshop, for the development of the biomaterials and owns processes, there is a need for a face-to-face practice to start a process of cultivation and transfer of tools related to the properties of the materials and an introduction to the techniques of dyeing, molding, drying, etc. After for 3 weeks, a face-to-face or online accompaniment is vital to activate a new maturation cycle and reinforce preservation, dyeing, molding, drying techniques, etc. towards the development of a final transdisciplinary incision/ creación. Through the processes and finished the incisions, the proposal would remain open to synchronize voluntarily to activate or a performative exhibition of the matter and / or final graphic memory in Fanzine format, in the Carbono Lab.

AOUCH.Lab is a domestic experiment based on transfer-learning skills as collective processes – DIWO do-it-with-others – that explores, since 2013, TEXTURES and ancestral textile techniques that tell science-fiction stories, evolving towards BIOTEXTILES – centered in transdisciplinary exploratory practices and interspecies relationships with materials and historical-socio-ecological contexts that reveal a know-how pulsing as embodied processes towards transformation and bio-degradation.
