Detritus and the burden of collapse
I close the door, take off my shoes, try to feel the presence of my body on each step, ground myself, and move away from the noise—both the symbolic and literal kind—that fills our daily lives in these current times. I walk through the chapels in silence, sit on the floor, breathe, lie down, feel… I have tried to understand the layers that give meaning to this bunker that has sheltered me for three months; each and every one of them has left a trace; it is not a neutral space.
In the depths of this rocky structure, there has been something that has accompanied and echoed me since the first day, a feeling that vibrated in my body, a weight, a struggle to act, a reverberation that wanted to come out that I did not know how to express. A dialogue perhaps between the caged echoes that resonate on the walls of this building, but also, undoubtedly, in those that remain locked inside of me: my experience and its latent traces.
I wanted to rip off the infected scab to feel and spread what weighs me down. I let the woodworm of emptiness, discomfort, exhaustion, and collapse take over me, express itself, and do whatever it wants with my body. In a system where we are only valued for our actions, for what we do, for our efficiency and productivity, for not stopping, for not questioning, for not feeling… Detritus and the burden of collapse is an invitation to feel this contemporary exhaustion and emptiness, to embody and feel the collapse; that which weighs us down, suffocates us, and which we avoid feeling as a result of an indigestion of stimuli, information, plans, images, consumption… to feel the weight of discomfort, and impossibility… to be waste, to be what makes us uncomfortable, to be part of what we don’t want to be aware of seeing… to feel this excess. I am this breakdown, I inhabit this devastation, on the margins, in silence… I breathe the weight of failure, of not being able…

(Crip multidisciplinary artist)

The cannibalism of normativity
In art, the crip body is used as a signifier long before the art work can speak for itself. My body is fragmented, my subjectivity erased and the privileged normativity decides which narrative to associate with my creation.
My artistic experience is labeled therapeutic for me, and inspirational for the viewer.
The domesticated eye is hungry for an aesthetic that provides moral comfort.
As an artist, I am dispossessed of the narrative of my work to be transformed into something consumable.
